Sonia Kiernan began studying piano at the age of 7. By the age of 10 she had made her television debut with the New Jersey Network’s Youth Talent Showcase. Continuing her musical studies through highschool, Sonia went onto receive a Bachelors and Masters in Piano Performance from Florida Atlantic University under the tutelage of Irena Kofman.
During her studies at FAU Sonia participated in numerous master classes
with artists such as Andre DeGroote, and Dario N’Taca. She performed with the University Orchestra, participated in the Palm Beach Atlantic International Piano Festival and accompanied instrumentalists throughout the department. Sonia was also the treasurer and president to FAU’s Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC).
After graduating with her Masters, Sonia went on to accompany West Palm Beach’s Opera Restoration Project as well as serve as accompanist to the Florida Vocal Association. She also maintained an active piano studio. Upon her return to New Jersey, Sonia began teaching piano in the Morris County and Bergen County areas. She has also remained an active performer accompanying and performing with various artists and organizations including the Dunellen Skylight Theater, and “Live Jazz! At The Hive”.
Sonia currently teaches in northern NJ and continues performing throughout the area. She is currently a member of The National Guild of Piano Teachers and NJ-MEA (Music Educators Association) with students participating in both organizations. Students of Sonia Kiernan have not only received honor roll statuses in their evaluations, but have also been accepted to renown camps such as the Westminster Conservatory piano summer camp. Aside from a classical background, Sonia has also released 2 albums on itunes in the pop/rock genre and performed on keyboard throughout Florida in a rock band.
She now arranges many modern songs for students to play on the piano.
